In ancient times, one of the first weapons used to kill animals was a bow and an arrow. Though technology has greatly improved, even though the lack of a need for hunting has decreased, an archery longbow is still used for sport. The archery longbow can be used by children and adults who want to target practice, hunt or compete in target competitions. The archery longbow might not look like a sophisticated piece of equipment, but it is. Without the correct wood for the front, the correct tension on the string or the right arrows, the apparatus wouldn’t function. And all of the parts need to work together so it operates like a well oiled machine, no matter what your purpose is in using it. The longbow is what it sounds like – longer than the traditional crossbow. The longbow is just a few inches shorter than the person who is holding it. Some people have archery longbows custom made to fit their height, so they have better use of it. The longbow is made of different wood, or sometimes even a composite material if one so desires. It is very durable and flexible, to fit with the person pulling the arrows. A longbow will then have a string, which is not really made of string but a composite material that the arrow hooks in to and can be pulled back. The archer then aims at the chosen target and releases the string, propelling the arrow forward. Depending on how far back the archer pulls will determine how far the arrow flies. Longbow arrows can be shot up in the air and travel for a great distance if done correctly. Longbows were used in ancient times from up on castle walls. The arrows were shot in the air with the intent they could come straight down and puncture a soldier who was protecting his front with a shield. The arrows could slip in the gaps and eliminate some soldiers before they got to the battleground or the building which the actual confrontation was taking place. Most hunters don’t use a longbow anymore. It is too cumbersome to carry in to the woods and its accuracy is not near to what a compact or a crossbow is. Longbows are more used in competitions and for sporting events that want to be somewhat like they were in historical times. Longbows are used a lot by people who act out in re-enactments of the French and Indian War and other wars that Indians fought in. The Indians were the original ones to make and use longbows, and then when the English and other settlers moved in, they copied the idea because it worked so well when they were hunting. Eventually, the longbows were used as weapons against the Indians, but they remained better marksmen with them because they had more skill than the soldiers who were new to using them did.
